If you’ve been looking into rust prevention for metal parts, you’ve probably seen both VCI film and VCI paper. They look different. They feel different. But what’s the real difference? And more importantly — which one should you use?
Here are the most common questions I get from customers.
1. What’s the main difference between VCI film and VCI paper?
VCI film is made of polyethylene. It’s a plastic-based material. You can see through it, it’s stretchy, and it’s waterproof. VCI paper is made of kraft paper. It’s not transparent, not stretchy, and it’s more breathable.
Both release VCI molecules to prevent rust. The difference is in the physical form and where they work best.
2. Which one is stronger?
VCI film is stronger. It resists tearing and punctures much better than paper. If you’re packaging heavy metal parts with sharp edges — like castings, forgings, or machined components — VCI film is usually the safer choice.
VCI paper is easier to tear. It works well for lighter parts or for wrapping between layers of stacked metal.
3. Which one is better for long-term storage?
VCI film seals completely. If you heat-seal the bag, moisture and oxygen stay outside. That makes it a solid choice for long-term storage, especially in humid environments.
VCI paper is more breathable. It works well for shorter storage periods or when the parts are already in a dry, controlled environment.
4. Which one is more transparent?
VCI film is transparent. You can see the metal parts without opening the package. That’s helpful for warehouse checks or quality inspections.
VCI paper is opaque. You can’t see what’s inside unless you open it.
5. Which one is more eco-friendly?
VCI paper is fiber-based and biodegradable. It’s often seen as the more environmentally friendly option, especially for single-use applications.
VCI film is recyclable in many facilities, but it doesn’t break down as easily as paper. That said, it lasts longer and uses less material overall for certain applications.
6. When should I choose VCI film?
Choose VCI film when:
Examples: cast iron parts, steel forgings, auto components, export packaging, long-term storage
7. When should I choose VCI paper?
Choose VCI paper when:
Examples: flat steel sheets, stacked stampings, in-process storage between production steps
8. Can I use both together?
Yes. Many customers do exactly that.
For example: wrap each layer of stamped parts with VCI paper, then put the whole stack into a VCI bag and seal it. The paper protects between layers, and the bag provides overall moisture protection. This combination works well for longer storage or sea freight.
9. Which one is more affordable?
VCI paper is usually cheaper per unit area. But that doesn’t always mean lower total cost.
If you need stronger protection, longer storage life, or fewer returns due to rust, VCI film often gives you better value in the long run.
10. Do you offer samples for both?
Yes. We support samples for both VCI film and VCI paper.
You can test them on your own parts — see how they perform in your specific environment.
